Scarves Up For Our Volunteers (PART 3)

To Our Southsiders Volunteer Team:

How we are approaching the end of 2017 is still beyond me. It feels like I haven’t had a chance to look up since our AGM last December, but in the best of possible ways! To say it’s been a busy year is an absolute understatement and without each of you helping and guiding me along the way, none of it would have been possible.

From the Membership side of things, I want to take this opportunity to personally thank Joann Bessler for getting me into this (I’ll get you back for it one of these days, I promise haha) and to Dan Olson, Dan Emerson, and Janna Gabrek for their support at the Membership table at Doolin’s throughout the season. Without their help, it would’ve been complete and utter scarf chaos, so kudos to them for keeping me in line!

Events & Partnerships have been a bit of a whirlwind this year. We had many things to accomplish in 2017 to get us back on course with our Partners and am happy to report we made excellent headway. Re-building our Match Day events was a HUGE goal of ours this year, and we’ve seen numbers in the 75+ range show up to Doolins for away viewings. That is a colossal step forward and I hope we can keep that momentum going into next season and beyond.

Another one of my goals at the beginning of the season was to plan at least one event per month that wasn’t solely match-day related and am happy to report we pulled off sixteen (16!!!) of them! From our Launch Party in February, to our 2nd annual Blue & White Navy trip to Bowen Island, to Ousted Appreciation Night and everything in between, we’ve accomplished so much and I truly cannot wait to see what 2018 brings. Events would not work without each and every supporter who comes out and celebrates with us. Thank you to everyone who made an effort, both on match days and at other events, to come out and show their Support with the Southsiders.

I’d like to take a moment to thank Rob Wheeler for passing the torch and being an amazing sounding board for some of my hairbrained event ideas. Special thanks are owed to Gail Embree & Brendan Beynon for bringing their enthusiasm our way over the course of the year and helping out with events whenever I needed some extra hands on deck. Thank you to Ryan Burns for holding down the fort and making sure the other volunteers were taken care of when I needed extra help. Thank you to Julian Anderson, Darren Alexander and the SouthIslanders for hosting our crew at Yates Street Taphouse in Victoria. Thank you to Chris Corrigan for all his help with Blue & White Navy as well as some awesome suggestions over the course of the season. Thank you to the Pigeon Casuals for bringing their enthusiasm over to Doolin’s in the latter portion of the season and getting the supporters pumped up with a few new chants. And finally, a massive thanks to James Young, Kieran Baldwin, Barry Walsh and the crew at Doolin’s for taking care of us this year. Our demands were high and they did a great job hosting us (Read: Sorry about the shout-y emails. I only meant *some* of it).

Thank you to each and every member and volunteer for making 2017 one of my proudest to be a Southsider.

Bring on 2018!

Scarves Up For Our Volunteers (PART 2)

On behalf of Vancouver Southsiders Operations, I want to thank everyone who came out to volunteer this year. We have been very lucky to have so many members stand up and make the Southside great in 2017. Thank you for your creativity, painting skills, and storytelling abilities. Thank you for your selling skills and marketing skills. Thank you for being loud, for cheering, clapping, and for your extraordinary ability to encourage others to support loudly with us.

Thank you for knowing how to use the elastic dongles and the pitfalls that goes along with them. Thank you for hauling flags, drums, and banners all over the city. Thank you for cleaning up and rolling every single flag at the end of the matches.  Thank you for your time, effort, hard work, and love of the Whitecaps. Thank you for supporting our team to into a second round playoff position!

I do really try and personally see everyone who comes out and to thank volunteers who spend so much time doing stadium set up, tifo design and painting, merchandise, stadium clean up, and with the march to the match. We had over 50 different people come out and help, and I hope each and every one of you knows how appreciated it was.  The entire gameday experience was what drew me to the Southside, and I was honoured to help pull it all together.  I would like to think we brought that feeling to others.  From the start to the end of the season we had incredible, creative, and often hilarious fun year together. Your willingness to use your gifts and abilities has strengthened our support of our team and of the Southside.

I had an amazing, crazy time, and learnt so much from you all. I truly hope that we get to work together again in the 2018 season.

Thank you, you make the Southside great.

Scarves Up For Our Volunteers (PART 1)

This is the first in a series of thank you messages from the Southsiders Executive Board to our many volunteers who made 2017 such an enjoyable experience for our little community. Part 1 acknowledges the hard work of our social media volunteers and our Southsiders Digital Team.

We cannot overstate how lucky we are to have Duncan Nicol as our in-house photographer. His pictures are ALWAYS fantastic. Covering our marches, matches, away travel & social events is basically a full time job. THANK YOU Duncan for your heroic efforts behind the lens. Please check out his superb photo galleries at flickr.com/vancouversouthsiders

The work by our Southsiders Digital Team has also been incredible. Tremendous thanks go to Darren Alexander, Aidan Rantoul, Oskar Steiner and Steve Kavanagh for grinding out so many videos and graphics for us! They looked absolutely fantastic. In case you weren’t aware, these fellows were responsible for creating things like the MTTM videos, our awesome social media banners, #CapsOnTV event posters, our scarf and T-shirt designs, our rocking new compass crest and so much more. THANK YOU!

Our internal and external communications is an enormous job. It takes a lot of work to keep our members informed about our pre-match activities, our #CapsOnTV away viewings, our social events and our fundraising efforts. We also had several people generating content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, our website and our News Flash membership e-mails throughout the year. A sincere THANK YOU to Aaryn Vivian, Chris Corrigan, Brandon O’Connor, Ryan Burns, Victor Sum, Paul Sabourin-Hertzog, Peter Czimmerman, John Knox, Duncan Nicol and a few others.

An extra round of applause is due to Rebecca Bollwitt, better known to the Twitter-verse as @Miss604. THANK YOU Rebecca for your awesomely entertaining Twitter takeovers on match days in Vancouver.

Why You Should Care About #SaveTheCrew

If you haven’t heard about the dreadful situation unfolding in Columbus, it’s important that you read up on this issue and speak out about it.

Anthony Precourt – the principal owner of the Columbus Crew since 2013 – is actively pursuing opportunities to relocate the team to Austin, Texas in the 2019 season if he can’t obtain a new stadium in downtown Columbus. This news broke just as the Columbus Crew began collecting non-refundable season ticket payments for 2018.

Supporters are understandably distressed and outraged by these developments. Equally concerning is that MLS Commissioner Don Garber is quoted in a news release issued by Precourt Sports Ventures which implies support for the relocation.

The Columbus Crew is one of the founding clubs of Major League Soccer. The team built the first soccer specific stadium in MLS, and they have a fiercely loyal fanbase with strong support from local businesses. There is no good reason to tear this club away from its community.

As Vancouverites we are all too familiar with what happens when wealthy entrepreneurs target existing professional sports teams for relocation to preferred cities as an alternative to paying huge expansion fees. That’s precisely why the Vancouver Grizzlies NBA team now plays in Memphis, Tennessee.

We would like you to stand up for supporters across our league. Mr. Precourt can’t move his team without support from other MLS owners. Tell the ownership team at Vancouver Whitecaps FC that the relocation of the Columbus Crew is unacceptable. Click here to add your name to a growing list of Vancouver supporters who want Greg Kerfoot, Steve Luczo, Jeff Mallett and Steve Nash to help #SaveTheCrew.
