March to the Match Route

First kick is upon us and what would the home match day experience be without a March to the Match?!

After our partner pub announcement, many of you had questions about the March and we are happy to report that earlier today we were finally able to finalize the route!

On Sunday March 4th, the Southsiders will be marching from Victory Square  with special guest March Leader, Whitecaps Legend Carl Valentine!  The March to the Match will depart at 1:45pm from the corner of Hamilton & West Pender, heading southbound on Hamilton to Robson Street / Whitecaps Way and into BC Place via Terry Fox Plaza.

As we will not be marching from Blarney Stone directly, members are encouraged to settle their tabs at the pub by 1:30pm on Sunday so they can make their way over to Victory Square to meet up with their fellow supporters and get ready to cheer the boys in Blue and White to 3 points and victory!

Your 2018 Executive Board

Thank you to everyone who attended our Annual General Meeting. Your newly elected executive board for 2018 is as follows:

Secretary: Peter Czimmerman

Treasurer: Catherine Alderson

Members At Large: Brendan Beynon, Darcie Kerr, Aaryn Vivian

Ombudsperson: Aidan Rantoul

Your President is Aaryn Vivian and your Vice President is Peter Czimmerman.

Thank you to departing board members Dylan Callow and John Knox. They along with member Greg Petrie were unsuccessful candidates this time around, and we appreciate them for stepping forward.

Final thanks go to outgoing Ombudsperson Andrew Van Eden, who did not seek re-election. Thank you for your guidance and for representing our members so well!

Scarves Up (PART 4)

Almost year ago, the 2016 executive board asked the members to make significant changes to our leadership structure, reducing the number of board positions in an attempt to entrust some of their responsibilities to the membership, and to encourage everybody to step up. And step up you all did!

Nothing pleases me more than reading heartfelt thank you notes (PART 1PART 2, and PART 3) written by the three key board members to conclude their season and acknowledge members for giving their valuable time to make the Southside a successful community and a strong group, rising to new heights. I’d also like to thank Mike Perzel, Axel Gustav, Dim McNami for pitching in with the IT Crowd and Rebecca Contant for her help with away ticket arrangements.

Having the 2017 closing on us, I would like to express my utmost gratitude and appreciation, and thank Aaryn Vivian, Andrew Van Eden, Darcie Kerr, Dylan Callow and John Knox for their hard work and support throughout this challenging year. Despite what happened on the pitch, we can all look back at 2017 with a smile and a sense of accomplishment, because of YOU.

Thank you & köszönöm.

Scarves Up For Our Volunteers (PART 3)

To Our Southsiders Volunteer Team:

How we are approaching the end of 2017 is still beyond me. It feels like I haven’t had a chance to look up since our AGM last December, but in the best of possible ways! To say it’s been a busy year is an absolute understatement and without each of you helping and guiding me along the way, none of it would have been possible.

From the Membership side of things, I want to take this opportunity to personally thank Joann Bessler for getting me into this (I’ll get you back for it one of these days, I promise haha) and to Dan Olson, Dan Emerson, and Janna Gabrek for their support at the Membership table at Doolin’s throughout the season. Without their help, it would’ve been complete and utter scarf chaos, so kudos to them for keeping me in line!

Events & Partnerships have been a bit of a whirlwind this year. We had many things to accomplish in 2017 to get us back on course with our Partners and am happy to report we made excellent headway. Re-building our Match Day events was a HUGE goal of ours this year, and we’ve seen numbers in the 75+ range show up to Doolins for away viewings. That is a colossal step forward and I hope we can keep that momentum going into next season and beyond.

Another one of my goals at the beginning of the season was to plan at least one event per month that wasn’t solely match-day related and am happy to report we pulled off sixteen (16!!!) of them! From our Launch Party in February, to our 2nd annual Blue & White Navy trip to Bowen Island, to Ousted Appreciation Night and everything in between, we’ve accomplished so much and I truly cannot wait to see what 2018 brings. Events would not work without each and every supporter who comes out and celebrates with us. Thank you to everyone who made an effort, both on match days and at other events, to come out and show their Support with the Southsiders.

I’d like to take a moment to thank Rob Wheeler for passing the torch and being an amazing sounding board for some of my hairbrained event ideas. Special thanks are owed to Gail Embree & Brendan Beynon for bringing their enthusiasm our way over the course of the year and helping out with events whenever I needed some extra hands on deck. Thank you to Ryan Burns for holding down the fort and making sure the other volunteers were taken care of when I needed extra help. Thank you to Julian Anderson, Darren Alexander and the SouthIslanders for hosting our crew at Yates Street Taphouse in Victoria. Thank you to Chris Corrigan for all his help with Blue & White Navy as well as some awesome suggestions over the course of the season. Thank you to the Pigeon Casuals for bringing their enthusiasm over to Doolin’s in the latter portion of the season and getting the supporters pumped up with a few new chants. And finally, a massive thanks to James Young, Kieran Baldwin, Barry Walsh and the crew at Doolin’s for taking care of us this year. Our demands were high and they did a great job hosting us (Read: Sorry about the shout-y emails. I only meant *some* of it).

Thank you to each and every member and volunteer for making 2017 one of my proudest to be a Southsider.

Bring on 2018!

Scarves Up For Our Volunteers (PART 2)

On behalf of Vancouver Southsiders Operations, I want to thank everyone who came out to volunteer this year. We have been very lucky to have so many members stand up and make the Southside great in 2017. Thank you for your creativity, painting skills, and storytelling abilities. Thank you for your selling skills and marketing skills. Thank you for being loud, for cheering, clapping, and for your extraordinary ability to encourage others to support loudly with us.

Thank you for knowing how to use the elastic dongles and the pitfalls that goes along with them. Thank you for hauling flags, drums, and banners all over the city. Thank you for cleaning up and rolling every single flag at the end of the matches.  Thank you for your time, effort, hard work, and love of the Whitecaps. Thank you for supporting our team to into a second round playoff position!

I do really try and personally see everyone who comes out and to thank volunteers who spend so much time doing stadium set up, tifo design and painting, merchandise, stadium clean up, and with the march to the match. We had over 50 different people come out and help, and I hope each and every one of you knows how appreciated it was.  The entire gameday experience was what drew me to the Southside, and I was honoured to help pull it all together.  I would like to think we brought that feeling to others.  From the start to the end of the season we had incredible, creative, and often hilarious fun year together. Your willingness to use your gifts and abilities has strengthened our support of our team and of the Southside.

I had an amazing, crazy time, and learnt so much from you all. I truly hope that we get to work together again in the 2018 season.

Thank you, you make the Southside great.
