Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of the Members of the Vancouver Southsiders Soccer Supporters Society (the “Society”) will be held at the Vancouver Public Library Central Library (350 West Georgia St, Vancouver, BC) on November 17th at 4:00pm.
The meeting will be held in the Alma VanDusen Room on the lower level of Library Square. All members in good standing are invited to attend.
First, a moment of joy. Watch the Whitecaps third goal against the Los Angeles Galaxy last Sunday. The Caps distribute the ball with purpose, react quickly to the space given them by the defenders and score. This type of organization in the attacking third came too late to make a difference this year, but might it be a hint of things to come in 2020?
We’ve finally reached the end of the season. The Whitecaps last opponent of 2019 is the strange europhilic brand that is Real Salt Lake. There is some potential for the Salts to improve their seeding in the playoffs, but other than pride the Whitecaps still have “nothing” to play for. Here’s hoping we get one last win to celebrate.
Fancy dress – it is a loosely held tradition that the final match of the season (usually much closer to Halloween) is “fancy dress.” Got a costume you’re test-running for the end of the month? Throw it on. Enjoy the last bit of live soccer we’re going to see at BC Place this year. See you all in the stands.

It’s the penultimate game of the 2019 Whitecaps season and we know where they’re ending up when it’s all said and done. Last place in the Western Conference is the Whitecaps final resting spot in the standings. We also know that we cannot “win” the wooden spoon, as the hapless FC Cincinnati is firmly stapled to last spot overall in the league.
The Whitecaps opponents for their final away game of the year are the LA Galaxy, who have already confirmed their spot in the playoffs. The Caps can only hope to play spoiler on table position in their last two matches.

Ask some sweaty, musclebound man sitting next to a smoky fire what is best in life and they will almost certainly say “90th minute game winning goals.”
Despite the season already being lost the Whitecaps are determined to go down fighting, hoping somehow to claw themselves away from the floor of the Western Conference. Beating Houston last weekend definitely helps. This Saturday brings the Eastern conference mirror image of our last opponent to BC Place in the form of the Columbus Crew for an early afternoon kickoff. Fingers crossed we get to another sprinkle of goal dust from the magical goal fairy.

If you take a peek at the MLS standings right this minute, you’ll see 5 teams have a prefix on their listing. The Whitecaps have earned an “e”, which I think we can all guess does not stand for “excellently already in the playoffs” (that prefix is x, naturally). Brace yourselves for a shock: the “e” means the Whitecaps have been officially “e”liminated from the playoffs.
While we’re all still reeling from this absolute thunderbolt of a surprise*, the Whitecaps season grinds on to its now confirmed conclusion on October 6th. This Saturday sees the also-struggling Houston Dynamo stagger into town after their game Wednesday against Minnesota. The Whitecaps back line is still thinned out after the injuries to Nerwinski and Godoy, so here’s hoping the midweek game that Houston played will slow them down a bit and the Caps can help them earn their own “e”.
Remember that when the team & players are down that support from the stands means the most to them. Be vocal and let them see that we’re still there supporting until the end.

Wednesday night in Montreal did not go well despite another early goal. Thursday didn’t go so hot either, with the Whitecaps flight from Montreal getting cancelled. No word yet if the team is on their way west yet, via plane, train or free-for-all hitchhiking frenzy.
Saturday we host NYCFC (who are already in town, by-the-by, to recover from the drain of cross-continent travel). NYCFC is within striking distance of first in the East. They’ll be well rested and keen to extract points from the cranky and demoralized Whitecaps. Should be a feisty game.

The bad news is a bit more negative than the good news is positive. The Caps conceded a league record number of shots on Saturday, are still last in the West and have barely managed to score a goal a game through the season. If you want a small silver lining to being in the basement of the Western Conference, the Wooden Spoon seems like a thankfully remote possibility with FC Cincinnati lagging 9 points behind. I wonder how the search for a new Director of Sportsball is going?
On to this weekend… Remember when the San Jose Earthquakes were Bad & Not Goodâ„¢ (see 2011,2013-2018)? Well it seems like they’re in another one of their few and far between exception years, as they find themselves in the upper half of the Western Conference, albeit barely. Their form has slipped in August including getting humiliated by LAFC Wednesday, so here’s hoping we can keep those not-actually-0%-chance-to-make-the-playoffs hopes alive by dragging them down into the muck with us.

There were some good things and some bad things that happened in Portland last weekend. Let’s start with the bad: the Whitecaps lost and will not be reclaiming the Cascadia Cup. The club is also mathematically eliminated from the Supporters Shield race. American Soccer Analysis has the Whitecaps chance of making the playoffs at a cool 0.0% (but that’s just, like, their opinion, man). So there will be no hardware this year. The season ends October 6th.
Now the good: that absolute screamer from Theo Bair.
So… DC United is coming to town. They’re a Playoff Teamâ„¢. They have A Good Playerâ„¢ who has apparently deigned to travel to our fair city. We’ll probably be seeing at least one of our new players, Ricketts and/or Chirinos, make an appearance for a few minutes. And maybe, if we’re lucky, see another thunderbolt launched from the boot of a Whitecap.

The Whitecaps, after over two months without a win, finally got a full three points! Felipe’s 84th minute goal on the pass from Russell Teibert was his first and last of the season. Why the last? Felipe has been traded to DC United and has already left Vancouver. Thanks for the win, Felipe, and good luck.
This weekend the Caps are down in Portland to dispute their final Cascadia Cup match of 2019. To win the cup, the Whitecaps need to beat Portland this Saturday, then have Portland beat or draw Seattle on Friday the 23rd.
If you purchased tickets to the match in Portland through us, they should be available for download right now at https://vancouversouthsiders.ca/ticket.
You may be aware of the fight that the 107IST / Timbers Army, as well as ECS from Seattle, are having with the league over the right to display anti-fascist imagery and messaging in support of human rights in the stands. As members of the ISC, the Southsiders have also spoken with club and league officials about the issues with the MLS Fan Code of Conduct, and support our Cascadian rivals on this issue. The Timbers Army have asked that anyone who wishes to display the Iron Front anti-fascist logo do so as an act of solidarity. Clothing and “personal” banners using the logo are permitted in the stadium. For more information see the Timbers Army’s many blog posts on the subject: https://timbersarmy.org/TimbersArmyBlog and this joint statement from ECS, Gorilla FC and 107IST: https://www.weareecs.com/multimedia/category-news/431-a-joint-statement-from-the-emerald-city-supporters-gorilla-football-club-and-107ist
There is a spray station planned for Saturday, making Iron Front stencils available should you want to personalize any clothing or other items. There is also an available source of blue t-shirts for a minimum $5 US donation. Email info@vancouversouthsiders.ca for details.
